    The Madison County Sheriff’s Merit Commission announces a career opportunity in Law Enforcement for the following position:

    LATERAL ENTRY JAIL OFFICER (MINIMUM PROBATIONARY RATE $26.69)

    Benefits include, but are not limited to, health insurance, thirteen (13) paid holidays, paid vacation, paid sick leave, retirement plan, furnished uniforms, and up to five (5) years creditable service.

    All Applicants for lateral appointment to the position of Madison County Sheriff’s Office Jail Officer must meet the following minimum qualifications and requirements at the time the application is filed:

     Applicant must be a United States citizen.
     Applicant must be a Madison County resident within six (6) months of hire.
     Applicant must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years old.
     Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license.
     Applicant must have an acceptable police record.
     Applicant must have a high school diploma or GED.
     Applicant must possess a current (Corrections or Police) State of Illinois Certification by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Certifications by the state of employment outside of Illinois will be accepted. (Applicants with out of State certifications/experience will be required to attend a State of Illinois certification academy).
     For Applicants who are required to be certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, Applicant must be in good standing with the Board (or equivalent for state of employment outside of Illinois).
     Applicant must have at least one (1) year of experience as a full-time, sworn, certified corrections officer/certified police officer with a municipal, county, federal, or state agency.
     Applicant must agree to comply with all requirements of the position and have the ability to pass all examination and training requirements.
     Applicant must furnish, upon request of the Merit Commission, the following:
    • Resume
    • Professional license
    • Training Certifications
    • Documents confirming work experience
    • Birth Certificate
    • High school diploma or GED certificate
    • Transcripts of higher education
    • Naval or military service board and discharge papers
    • Any other employment-related material as requested or required

    Applicants are advised that the position of Jail Officer requires very good motor skills, visual acuity, good hearing, and the ability to perform under stressful conditions. These are considered essential functions for basic entry-level Jail Officer positions.     The Selection Process includes, but is not limited to, a thorough character and background investigation, polygraph test, and fit-for-duty medical exam. Prior drug use may eliminate Applicant.

    Applicants who successfully complete the application process will be placed on a lateral eligibility list. Applicants will be notified by the Madison County Merit Commission of placement on the lateral eligibility list.
