About Us

Refuge is a nonprofit organization based in Wood River, Illinois, dedicated to providing trauma-informed counseling, support, and education to children from birth to age 11 and their caregivers. We believe that healing begins in relationship, and we work to create a safe, welcoming environment where children and families can begin to rebuild and thrive.

Through individualized therapy, caregiver education, and wraparound support, we meet families where they are and walk alongside them toward lasting healing. Our services include counseling for children, parenting classes, school-based therapy programs in local districts, and community education aimed at raising awareness and preventing trauma. We also provide training and resources for professionals so they are better equipped to support the families they serve.

At Refuge, we believe in a holistic, collaborative model of care—one that strengthens not only the individual child but the family and wider community. Our vision is changing the trajectory of a child’s life, their family, and the community for generations to come.
